Callaway Men’s Strata Golf Set Review

The Callaway Strata Ultimate golf set is available in a number of variations – the two most popular are the 18-piece set (the subject of this review) and the 12-piece set (which doesn’t include a SW, 5W and the additonal hybrid in the 18-piece).

Great deals for the Strata 18-piece can be found on Amazon and the specialist golf retailer, Global Golf.

Unfortunately for UK readers the Strata set is not sold in the United Kingdom. A great alternative is the Wilson ProStaff or Profile golf set.

Overall User Experience

The Callaway Strata Ultimate Golf Set is definitely one of the best beginner golf club sets available on the market. The set is available in 18-pieces and 12-pieces. The 18-piece set is a great option. It includes really well crafted irons for beginners, starting at a 6 iron all the way through to a pitching wedge and sand wedge. We found the irons really easy to hit and they had a great feel. For the lower irons (the 3-5 irons) Callaway have added 2 awesome hybrids, which are great too. The woods are the gem in the set. Callaway are known for their woods and with the Strata woods they don't disappoint. There is a titanium driver, and 3W and 5W, with steel heads. They are really well built and have huge sweet spots. The set is complimented with a great lightweight bag, a putter and 5 cool headcovers. If you are just starting out this set is a brilliant shout!

Pros and Cons

PROS:
  • On the whole the 18-piece Strata set is the most comprehensive and best value for offer on the market for beginner and intermediate golfers.
  • The woods are really good quality. The driver head is 460cc and made from titanium, and has a huge sweet spot.
  • The addition of two hybrids to replace the lower irons makes the set perfectly suited for higher handicappers.
  • We were particularly impressed with the irons. They start at the 6 iron and run through to the pitching wedge. The irons have a solid offset which makes it easier to launch the ball into the air.
  • Unlike many beginner sets, the Strata 18-piece includes a sand wedge.
CONS:
  • There really isn’t much to complain about. The bag itself, although lightweight, is not the most sturdy or comfortable on the shoulders. But apart from that, this set has all the bases covered.

What’s Inside the Bag? Features & Accessories

The Callaway 18-piece Strata Golf Set is one of the most comprehensive and impressive beginner or intermediate complete golf sets on the market. Here is what you’ll find inside the bag!

Driver and Fairway Woods: The bag has a 460cc titanium driver and two fairway woods (3-Wood and 5-Wood fairway wood) with steel heads. Each wood has a huge clubface and sweet spot, which helps improve accuracy and consistency, especially from mishits. The woods come with lightweight graphite shafts that enhance speedy swing and long distance shots. Seriously, we were absolutely bombing the driver far and straight!

Hybrids: The Strata 18-piece set comes with two hybrids – a 4H and 5H – that replace the much more difficult to hit 3-5 irons. We found the hybrids to be very forgiving and easy to hit off the fairway as well as in the rough. You can expect great precision and accuracy with hybrids, and with the Strata versions you won’t be disappointed.

Irons: The 18-piece set comes with comes with 5 irons and a sand wedge. The irons start at the 6 iron and run through to a pitching wedge. The design of the irons are really great for beginners as they have a decent offset of the clubface from the shaft, which helps with launching the ball off the ground, and a dispersed weight to the perimeter which increases the sweet spot and helps with mishits. The sand wedge is a great addition as many beginner sets don’t include one.

Putter: The Strata putter has great feel on the green. The face of the putter has been milled, which helps with accuracy and the weight of the putter is perfectly balanced for control.

Bag and Accessories: The 18-piece Strata set also includes a very lightweigt stand bag, which comes with tee holders, a rain hood, six pockets and a carry backstrap. The bag is a little flimsy and uncomfortable on the shoulders, but for the price one can’t really argue. All the woods and hybrids also come with headcovers, 5 in total.

Why Should You Buy Callaway Strata Golf Set?

If you are just starting out in golf or have already played a few rounds and the golf bug has bitten, then the Callaway Strata set is a great starters option. The set covers all the bases and is really good quality and great value for money.

The Strata set is particular good for its variety of club options and the design of the clubs for beginner golfers. You will find the clubs really easy to hit and will no doubt improve your game quickly!

For this reason we rate them as our Editor’s Choice for the best golf clubs for beginners.

Hi, I'm Tom! I run the show here at the #GGFB. Golf is my absolute passion and given the choice I would be on the course all the time. Alas, my day job and lovely wife help moderate my enthusiasm for the game. I hope you have a blast browsing the site and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to drop me a line. Current handicap: 12!

I would love some feedback on what the differences are between the Strata Ultimate 18 piece set and the Strata Tour 18 piece set. I can’t seem to find this information anywhere.

Hi Jeremy, the difference between the Callaway Strata Tour vs Ultimate is not entirely obvious, but from what I can gather from the manufacturer is that the Tour have a Titanium composite driver instead of a Full Titanium driver in the Ultimate. Composite drivers have more durability. The Tour comes with a mallet putter, the Ultimate has a blade putter, and it also appears that the shafts in the Tour irons are slightly stiffer than the Ultimate, making the Tour set potentially better for players with a faster swing. Hope this helps!

    Good morning.
Tom, this is a great site and a big help to me as a beginner. Jeremy asked the same question I had and got the answer I was looking for. I was looking at the Strata Plus and bounced back and fourth with the Ultimate set. I settled on the Ultimate set, after all I got it for only eleven dollars more than the Plus set. The Ultimate set should be here next week. In the mean-time, thanks Tom for the videos.
