Buying The Best Spikeless Golf Shoes
The choice with materials really lies between leather and synthetic. Leather is by far the best and most popular options when it comes to golf shoes. However, it is much more expensive and probably not needed if you don’t play often. Leather is generally waterproof and breathes very well. Synthetic is cheaper, but tends to stretch a little overtime and won’t stay as fitted to your foot.
Whilst traditional shoe laces are by far the most popular lacing system in golf shoes, there are several other option available. For ease of use and comfort, some manufacturers are now using velcro straps instead of laces to fasten the shoe. Another form that is slowly being introduced is proprietary lacing systems which is similar to that of the lacing systems found on ski boots. This is generally more expensive and possibly not worth the extra cash just yet.
Sadly, one of the drawbacks of spikeless golf shoes is that they are generally not waterproof. There are a few available on the market, but these come at a much higher price. Having a waterproof golf shoes really depends on when and where you play. Obviously, if you live in a hot, dry location then standard shoes will do fine.
Clearly having lightweight shoes will make your game a lot more pleasurable, particularly if you play long hours. However, you need to take into account things like stability and waterproofing material. The lightest golf shoes on the market may not actually be the best option for you. Do your homework before purchasing.
There has been a fair amount of debate over the issue of stability in recent years. Some manufacturers prefer the traditional tight fit that holds your feet securely in place, whereas some manufacturers prefer to give your feet some space and move freely when hitting and walking. There is no right answer, its personal preference, however, taller and bigger people tend to prefer tighter options.
Always look for a warranty, particularly when purchasing waterproof golf shoes. Most manufacturers will offer a 1 year weatherproofing warranty, however, some offer 2 years. The longer the better obviously. Avoid waterproof shoes without a warranty of some kind.
Overall, having a good pair of spikeless golf shoes is a great idea, especially if you play a considerable amount. Their soft sole and linings make them a joy to wear and are far more gentle on your back and legs than spiked versions. You also get the added benefit of never having to clean the spikes and take your shoes on and off before and after every round.
