Callaway Men’s Strata Complete Golf Set with Bag (12-Piece) Review

The sands of time haven’t chipped away at the standing of the Callaway Men’s Strata 12-Piece Golf Set (with Bag), which is one of the most comprehensive and stylish packages on the market for beginner golf clubs.

Some beginners prefer to shop for each part of the bag separately, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But we’ll always be ones to make the case for complete sets. What’s important is that they offer versatility, and cover every base from driver to putter, so that you’ll be well equipped to improve your game – or at the very least, enjoy it to the maximum.

And that’s why Callaway have duly delivered a 12-piece set here which is user-friendly, and is underscored by the forgiveness each and every club offers. Whether wood, hybrid, iron or putter, all in sundry incorporate the best of technological gains to give you the platform to get the best value for your shots. Not to mention value for your dollar, too.

The whole set is equipped with the accessories you need, and the stand bag itself has an elegant beauty, and comes with a shoulder strap for easy carrying on the golf course. If ever there is a complete set for newbies that ticks all the crucial boxes, this is probably it.

We reviewed the Strata 12-piece as part of our Best Golf Club Sets for Beginners. You can also read our detailed review on the 18-piece Strata set here.

Callaway Men’s Strata 12-Piece Golf Set Review

The Callaway Men’s Strata 12-Piece Golf Set has a 460cc driver, a nifty 3-wood, hybrid (5H), 6-9 irons, a pitching wedge and a mallet putter. It also comes with a stand bag that has five pockets, and backpack-style straps to make carrying easier.

Callaway Men’s Strata 12-Piece Golf Set Assessment

9 Total Score
User Experience

As newcomers to the game, one of the biggest hooks of all is to hit it far – and, as a bonus, straight – with the big stick. The key is thus the 460cc driver, which has an enormous sweet spot. The feel at impact is something to behold, and the hang time you get with this club will mean you can enjoy the ball going and going (and going!) as you hold your pose. We were less enthused with the 3-wood, but the hybrid is a lovely little club which is incredibly easy to hit. The stainless-steel irons, which incorporate progressive sole-width technology, are quite forgiving, but, more than that, they give you excellent feedback so that you can focus on precision and control. The signature feature of the putter is the T-style alignment, and it doesn’t take long to get the measure of the distance control too. As for the bag, this is one of most carry-friendly stand bags we’ve sampled among complete sets. It’s made from quality materials, and, with plenty of pockets and storage, Callaway really haven’t missed a trick from A to Z.

Pros & Cons

  • Driver will help you punch above your weight in terms of distance and consistency
  • With perimeter weighting and progressive sole-width technology, the irons find a good mix between forgiveness and control
  • The hybrid is a brilliant little club. User-friendly, and a great way to navigate tricky lies
  • Bag is shoulder-friendly (albeit a bit heavy), and with a range of features and accessories like headcovers and rain hood, it covers all bases
  • Such a good price! This really is decent value for money
  • The 3-wood isn’t the easiest to hit. Good distance, but I didn’t find it all that forgiving
  • The driver shaft is quite whippy, which won’t suit fast swingers of the club

What’s inside the bag? Features & Accessories

Forgiving, well-designed, and high-quality to boot. These are the reasons the Callaway Men’s Strata 12-Piece Complete Set continues to hold its own, even as a flurry of incumbents have entered the fray in the years since it first saw the light of day. Here is what you’ll find inside the bag!

Driver: The 460cc driver has a delightful sweet spot. Mammoth, in fact! You can give this a full go off the tee, safe in the knowledge that there is ample forgiveness on offer to pick up the slack if you don’t get it out of the middle. As we mentioned above, there is a lot of flex in the shaft, so this may increase variance in shape for those with high swing speeds. But, all things considered, this is a great club which you are really going to enjoy.

Fairway wood and hybrid: I’m going to say it off the bat: I wasn’t all that enamoured with the 3-wood. It has a decent sweetspot, and you will get some good distance. But I struggled to get a consistent shape and trajectory, and mishits seemed to go significantly awry. That said, the hybrid is a gem. This type of club isn’t just about hitting shots that feel good on the range – it’s your saviour when you find yourself in difficult lies, or if you’re struggling with your driver or woods. And our take is that this 5H will succeed in both respects. A brilliant bridge between longer iron and wood.

Irons: In this set, you’ll get a full complement of irons from 6-PW, and they are all lovely to hit. Forgiveness, of course, is key to this, and there’s a generous sweetspot which makes for a good feel at impact. But the other important elements with iron play are precision and control, and the dovetailing of perimeter weighting and sole-width technology augment an improved sense of accuracy. Perhaps there is a case for a sand wedge to provide that extra help around the greens, but you can’t help but be impressed with the technology these irons exhibit.

Putter: The mallet putter in the Callaway Men’s Strata 12-Piece Complete Set doesn’t seem to get much press, but we really liked it. The alignment lines help you to square up the face, and although we initially found the bounce of the putter face to be a bit “springy”, we got used to the feel in no time. A good mix of accuracy and distance: exactly what any player looks for in a putter.

Bag and Accessories: We noted a few complaints online about the bag, and the obvious criticism is that it is a little on the heavy side. However, the backpack strap system makes it a good fit, and the bag is comfortable on the shoulders. The stand works a treat too, and it’s good to see a full set of accessories such as rain hoods and a cooler pocket. Speaking of which, there are five pockets to make use of – plenty of storage space for your clothes, equipment, and all the other bits you like to take out onto the course with you.

Why should you buy the Callaway Men’s Strata 12-Piece Golf Set?

When you start the game of golf, and once you’ve been well and truly hooked, I’d venture that you were probably a little bit surprised at the number of pieces of equipment and amenities you need to buy. But the one you really want to get right is the choice of clubs you use; especially if you’re buying them all in one go by virtue of a complete set.

The fact that the Callaway Men’s Strata 12-Piece Golf Set is still so popular two years after launch should tell you a lot about the quality it brings to the table. Forgiveness is the most important factor of all, and, bar the 3-wood, Callaway have got it absolutely spot on here.

But the fact that these clubs also provide accuracy and precision, and empower you to improve your game via the feedback you get, is what gives it an extra edge. It’s a bonus that they’re easy on the eye too, while the bag (and the features and accessories that come with it) is a solid final piece of the puzzle.

And all of this for a very competitive price: what more could you ask for? There are some fine complete sets out there today, but not many can lay claim to toppling this particular package from Callaway. As value for money and quality go, this is one to strongly consider if you’re a keen newbie looking to get the most out of our delightful game.

Hi, I'm Tom! I run the show here at the #GGFB. Golf is my absolute passion and given the choice I would be on the course all the time. Alas, my day job and lovely wife help moderate my enthusiasm for the game. I hope you have a blast browsing the site and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to drop me a line. Ive been golfing 9 holes once a week or so for about a year now with a set of TM Burner Midsize (90’s?). I got them cheap to try golf out and it turns out i actually kind of enjoy it. I feel it is time to get a new set and was wanting your opinion on what i should look into. The 16pc Strata set is on my radar, as is the Nextt & Wilson sets. Thoughts?

Hi Jay, I’m a bigger fan of the Callaway Strata set than the Wilson or Nextt set. However, they are very much beginner clubs and as you have been playing for a year you might be better off going with Callaway XR irons and woods. These are great for intermediate, but admittedly a lot more pricey than Stratas. All the best!
